Top 6 Things to Do & See in Ambergris Caye

Belize is located in Central America, only a 2 hour flight from Miami. The country has beautiful jungles, Mayan Ruins and some of the best snorkeling and diving in Latin America.

‘The undisputed superstar of Belize's tourism industry, 'La Isla Bonita' strikes an impressive and perhaps even magical balance of large-scale tourism development with a fun, laid-back atmosphere. Sure it gets busy – especially in high season when an endless procession of golf carts clogs the narrow streets of the main town, San Pedro – but it's still the kind of place where it's acceptable to hold up traffic while you greet an old acquaintance.’ Lonely Planet

Here are some 6 recommendations for activities during your vacation on Ambergris Caye;

Diving

One of our top attractions is the Great Blue Hole which Discovery Channel ranked as number one on its list of ’The 10 most amazing places on Earth’.  It is the world’s largest natural formation of its kind and is part of the Belize Barrier Reef System.

Chocolate

Did you know that Belize grows its own Cacao Beans? Rumor has it that chocolate was invented by the Mayans. It gets even better, Hershey company housed their cacao plantation in Belize in the 80’s so Belize has bragging rights among the best. The Toledo district, the furthest south in the country is the hub for most of the chocolate production today on Ambergris Caye however you can visit The Belize Chocolate Company, a family owned Bean to Bar artisan chocolate maker using certified organic, fair trade and direct trade from small family farms of Southern Belize. Make your own chocolate in a 45-minute class or book a private class

Mayan Ruins

The most impressive ruins in Belize are located on the mainland but Ambergris Caye offers one fascinating Mayan site, Marco Gonzalez. The island was once home to more than 20.000 Mayan traders at the height of their civilization so here you will find small mounds or ceremonial caves and it makes for a great half-day trip to the south part of the island. Also consider booking a trip to the mainland to visit Xunantunich, Cahal Pech or Lamanai.

Nightlife
Ambergris Caye has the widest selection of eateries and nightclubs, of all the places to visit in Belize. There are dockside bars or great beachfront restaurants. Two of our favorite beach bars and restaurants  are Sandy Toes Beach Bar & Grill and the fun and friendly The Truck Stop

Belize is a world renowned sport fishing destination. Visitors can experience fantastic fishing- catch and release only- for the ‘Big 3’ - bonefish, tarpon and the elusive permit. The entire Caribbean coastline is home to a broad range of species that includes barracuda, jacks, snapper, snook, sharks and the occasional pelagic, with some of the largest classic tarpon flats found anywhere on earth.
